Can I take eyeshadows in my handbag while going through security on the airport?

I'm going from Los Angeles through Mexico so idk the rules of LAX. I really want to take my makeup palette of eyeshadows but I'm not sure. Why do you have to take in a plastic bag? Thanks for anyone that helps me I really need to know cause I start packing next week. Thank you :)
