Carnival Cruises and luggage security?

I'm going on my first cruise to canada this summer and I was wondering how hard it is to sneak liquor on board? I've seen suggestions like putting it in mouth was containers and dying it with food color but my concern is how in depth their searches of my suitcase will be. For example, will they go through all my luggage, take out the bottle, open it up and smell it? or will they just take a look inside the luggage and wave me on my way? Also, if I am caught, will they press charges for possession? Also, I heard from a few of my friends who have been on many cruises that they do not allow you to bring water bottles on board. Is this true?
